Agency History: | The Department of Natural Resources was created by the 1957 State Legislature to consolidate state land management duties previously held by several agencies or segments of government, including the State Forest Board, State Capitol Committee, Harbor Line Commissioners, and others.
The Commissioner of Public Lands is a constitutionally elected officer whose office executes the decisions of the several boards controlling state land sales, leases, and purchases from 1889 to 1957. The Commissioner now serves as administrator of the Department of Natural Resources. The Board of Natural Resources, which replaced the earlier boards and commissions, serves as a policy making body, approves values set, arranges for the sale or lease of state lands, and in general insures that the lands and resources of the state are properly managed. |
